Bell Green: From Gasworks and Sheds to a New Town Centre
Lower Sydenham’s Bell Green is dominated by a retail park, big supermarkets and the site of the old gasholders. It is set to change a great deal. The Sydenham Society reported that Barratt London applied to build 261 homes on the former gasholder site, in three blocks of 5 to 15 storeys beside Alan Pegg Place, with shops, workspace and a new greenway behind the Livesey Hall. The wider area is marked for much more change over the coming years.
Today the retail park generates plenty of our Sydenham work: large items bought in store that will not fit in a car, stock moving between branches, and click-and-collect orders that need to reach a customer the same afternoon. Getting Out of Sydenham
Sydenham does not sit on a major trunk road, which keeps it quieter but means a short run to reach one. Sydenham Road and Southend Lane lead east to the A21 at Catford and Bromley Road. Westwood Hill climbs west to Crystal Palace and on to the A23 and A214. North, the South Circular is five minutes away at Forest Hill.
