When should you book an XLWB van courier?
Book an extra-long wheelbase (XLWB) van when the load is long or bulky rather than heavy: lengths up to about 4.2m, four standard pallets, or high-volume goods up to around 1,000kg. You get a dedicated van and driver, collection usually within the hour in London and the South East, and one fixed price agreed before anything moves.
XLWB Van Dimensions and Payload
XLWB means extra-long wheelbase: the longest panel van in our fleet, built for length and floor space rather than raw weight. The figures below are typical for the vans we run. Makes differ a little, so we confirm the exact van on the call.
| Specification | Typical figure |
|---|---|
| Load length | About 4.2m of floor |
| Load width | About 1.2m usable |
| Load height | About 1.75m inside |
| Load volume | Roughly 8.8 cubic metres |
| Payload | Around 1,000kg, goods plus packaging and pallets |
| Pallets | 4 standard UK pallets (1,200 x 1,000mm), in single file |
| Loading | Rear doors and a side door, by forklift, dock or hand. No tail lift |
| Price | On request, fixed before collection |
Four pallets and 1,000kg sounds generous until you do the sum. That’s an average of 250kg a pallet. Four pallets of boxed flat-pack or display kit fit easily. Four pallets of tiles or bottled drinks don’t, because two of those alone can pass the limit. So the XLWB is a length and volume van first. Tell us the weight of each pallet, or the heaviest single item and the overall total, and we’ll say straight away whether the XLWB is right or whether a heavier-rated van suits the job better.
Our XLWB Van Courier Work
Our XLWB van courier work moves long lengths, bulky consignments and four-pallet loads across London and every mainland UK postcode on one dedicated van. It’s fast, reliable, direct and fairly priced, and long items lie flat on the floor instead of propped at an angle.

Manufacturing
Fabricators and engineering shops moving extrusions, bar and long fabrications between units.

Retail and eCommerce
Sellers shipping bulky flat-pack orders or four pallets of light stock to a store or fulfilment centre.

Bodyshops and dealers moving bumpers, exhausts and long trim parts that won’t fit a shorter van.
Why Book an XLWB Van Courier for Long Loads
Six-metre pipe can be cut in half. Worktops can’t, and neither can a printed fascia or a run of aluminium track already measured for a shopfit. When a long item turns up late, the fitters stand idle and the site loses a day it was paying for. Send it on a shared network and length counts against you: long items get flagged as awkward, held back, or handled as surcharged freight that sits in a depot until there’s room.
A network handles freight four to six times through depots. Our XLWB is loaded once at your door and unloaded once at the drop. Pallets are the most common way goods move by road, and the DfT found palletised goods made up 27% of journeys in 2025. Long, light loads are where the XLWB earns its keep, whether that’s long and bulky item moves or stand and venue deliveries with a fixed goods-in slot.
Book by phone and a driver is usually with you within the hour in London and the South East. Nationwide, we confirm an honest ETA before you commit. Long runs are planned at goods-vehicle speeds, because vans count as goods vehicles, limited to 50mph on single carriageways and 60mph on dual carriageways. You’ll get a call or text at pickup and en route, then photo or signature proof by email. Our notes on how long loads are secured explain the strapping.
Under 4m and three pallets or fewer? The 1,200kg LWB van carries more weight and costs less. Wide or tall items, or no forklift at either end, suit a Luton with tail lift. The XLWB quote is fixed and includes fuel, tolls, Congestion Charge and ULEZ, with goods-in-transit cover to £10,000 and £1,000,000 public liability. Higher declared values are arranged in writing, and regular runs move onto an agreed contract rate.
XLWB, LWB or Luton: Choosing the Right Size
Our three larger vans overlap, so here’s where each one wins. We quote the smallest van that carries your load safely, and we’ll tell you if a cheaper one will do.
| Vehicle | Guide price | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| LWB van (3 pallets, around 1,200kg, loads to about 4m) | from £69 | Shorter, denser loads: bagged materials, machine parts, three heavy pallets |
| XLWB van (4 pallets, around 1,000kg, loads to about 4.2m) | on request | The longest lengths in a panel van, a fourth light pallet, bulky goods that fill space before weight |
| Luton with tail lift (5 pallets, around 1,000kg, 4.2m box) | from £89 | Wide or tall items, and sites with no forklift or loading dock |
Why pick the XLWB over a Luton when both carry about 4.2m? The XLWB is a panel van, lower and narrower than a box-bodied Luton, so it tucks into tighter streets and loading bays. Its side door also lets a driver reach the front of a long load without unloading everything behind it. Large vans are the backbone of UK freight, and SMMT figures give large vans a 66.7% share of new van registrations in 2025. We don’t publish a starting price for the XLWB, because long loads vary so much in handling and access. Across the fleet, longer journeys work out at roughly £1.10 to £1.80 per mile, depending on vehicle size, distance and urgency. Nights, weekends and bank holidays cost a little more, and that’s already inside the fixed quote. There’s no postcode or rural surcharge, and ferry fares are included.
Three Checks Before an XLWB Collection
Long loads go wrong at the doors, not on the road. A two-minute check before you book saves a wasted trip and a second van.
Length Through the Doors
A 4.2m item has to clear the rear opening and the bulkhead. Give us the exact length with packaging, and say if it bends, flexes or has a fixed bracket on one end.
The Widest Point
Usable width is about 1.2m. A sofa or crated machine may need to travel on its side, or go on the 2.0m-wide Luton instead. Measure the widest point, not the average.
Weight and Access
Tell us the total weight, whether there’s a forklift or dock at each end, and any limits such as a low barrier or a timed loading bay. We check before the driver leaves.
Load security isn’t only an HGV rule. The government’s code of practice on securing loads covers light goods vehicles and small vans too. On our XLWB, long items are strapped to the floor rails along their length so they can’t slide forward under braking, and pallets go in nose to tail so nothing can shift sideways.
When an XLWB Isn’t the Right Call
We’d rather you choose the right service than the one we happen to sell. Four situations where something else suits you better.
Short, Heavy Loads
Three dense pallets near 1,200kg? The LWB carries more weight and costs less than the XLWB.
Wide or Tall Items
Anything over 1.2m wide that can’t be turned belongs in the Luton’s 2.0m-wide box.
No Forklift Anywhere
Heavy pallets with no dock at either end need a tail lift. The Luton has one. The XLWB doesn’t.
No Deadline and Your Own Driver
If a member of your team can drive it next week, hiring a van may cost less than a courier today.
Hiring and driving your own XLWB is a fair choice for an unhurried move. Most panel vans sit under 3,500kg, and a category B car licence covers vehicles up to 3,500kg. You’ll still need to collect the van, insure the goods, load and strap it yourself, then return it. Book us instead when the run is urgent, when nobody can spare a day behind the wheel, or when the goods need cover and proof of delivery from the moment they leave your hands.
How It Works
Four steps from your first call to a signed handover, with the price agreed before anything is loaded.
Get a Fixed Quote
Give us both postcodes, the longest and widest items, the total weight and how it will be loaded. One all-inclusive price comes back on the call, so you can say yes there and then.
Book Your Delivery
Confirm by phone or online. Written confirmation follows with the van size, pickup time, price and a direct number for the controller running your job.
We Collect
A DBS-checked driver arrives, usually within the hour, checks every length against the booking and straps the load along the floor so it can’t move.
We Deliver Direct
The van drives straight to your drop with no depot stops. You get photo or signature proof with the recipient’s name and the exact time.
Worried Long Lengths Will Arrive Bent or Late?
They won’t sit in a depot or get stacked under someone else’s boxes. Your load is the only thing in the van, and the driver who straps it is the one who hands it over.
Fixed All-Inclusive Quote
One price covering driver, fuel, tolls, Congestion Charge and ULEZ, agreed before your goods are collected.
Dedicated Vehicle
Only your consignment is on board, so the XLWB goes from your door to the drop without detours.
Photo and Signature POD

24/7 Human Support
A real person answers at any hour and can tell you where your driver is and when they’ll arrive.

Frequently Asked Questions
What people ask before they book an extra-long wheelbase van, answered plainly.
What is an XLWB van?
An XLWB van is an extra-long wheelbase panel van, the longest version of a large van model. Its axles sit further apart and the body is extended, giving a longer load floor. In our fleet that means about 4.2m of length, four standard pallets and a payload of around 1,000kg, with rear and side doors but no tail lift.
What are the internal dimensions of an XLWB van?
Our XLWB vans have a load length of about 4.2m, a usable width of about 1.2m and an inside height of about 1.75m, roughly 8.8 cubic metres in all. Exact sizes vary a little by make. Measure your longest and widest items with packaging on, and give us both figures when you ask for a quote.
What is the payload of an XLWB van?
Our XLWB vans carry around 1,000kg, including pallets and packaging. That’s an average of 250kg across four pallets, so the XLWB suits long or bulky loads rather than dense ones. We never load past the limit, because an overweight van brakes and steers badly and isn’t legal. Heavier, shorter loads go on the LWB.
What’s the difference between an XLWB and an LWB van?
The XLWB is longer and takes more pallets, while the LWB carries more weight. Our XLWB takes loads to about 4.2m, four pallets and around 1,000kg. Our LWB takes loads to about 4m, three pallets and around 1,200kg, from £69. If nothing is longer than 4m and you have three pallets or fewer, the LWB is usually the better buy.
Should I hire an XLWB van or book one with a driver?
Hire a van if the move isn’t urgent and someone on your team can collect, load, drive and return it. Book a courier when the delivery is time-critical or nobody can spare the day. With us you get a DBS-checked driver, goods-in-transit cover to £10,000, strapping and photo or signature proof of delivery, all inside one fixed quote.
How much does an XLWB van courier cost?
XLWB pricing is on request, because long loads vary so much in handling and access. Call 020 4525 2039 or ask online and a controller agrees one fixed price before collection. It includes fuel, tolls, Congestion Charge and ULEZ. Nights, weekends and bank holidays cost a little more, but that’s inside the same quote, with no postcode surcharge.
