How long does a courier to Northern Ireland actually take?
On a dedicated vehicle, usually next morning from most of England and the same day from western Scotland. There is a sea crossing involved, so nobody can honestly offer same day delivery from London to Belfast. What we offer instead is one van and one driver the whole way, with a realistic delivery time given before you book.
Delivery to Northern Ireland is the point where a lot of carriers quietly stop being straightforward. Surcharges appear, delivery estimates turn into ranges, and the tracking goes quiet for a day while a parcel sits waiting for a sailing it was never booked onto.
A dedicated courier to Northern Ireland removes all of that. Your consignment is loaded once in mainland Britain, stays on the same vehicle across the Irish Sea, and is delivered by the same driver who collected it. No depot at Cairnryan, no hub outside Belfast, and no hand-off to a third party you never chose.
How the Crossing Actually Works
Every road vehicle between Great Britain and Northern Ireland sails, and the route we choose sets the timing far more than the mileage does. These are the freight crossings available:
| Crossing | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Cairnryan – Belfast | About 2 hours, roughly 6 sailings a day | Scotland and the North. The fastest way across by a distance. |
| Cairnryan – Larne | About 2 hours, roughly 6 sailings a day | Antrim, Ballymena and the north east. Larne is 30 minutes from Belfast. |
| Birkenhead – Belfast | About 8 hours, roughly 3 sailings a day | The Midlands and North West, usually run overnight. |
| Heysham – Belfast | About 8 hours, 2 sailings a day | Lancashire and the North, a dedicated freight route. |
| Heysham – Warrenpoint | About 9 hours, roughly 4 sailings a day | Newry, south Down and Armagh, landing closer to the destination. |
In practice that makes next day delivery to Northern Ireland the realistic standard from most of England, and same day achievable from Scotland. From Glasgow or Carlisle, a morning collection can be delivered in Belfast the same day via Cairnryan. From Birmingham, Manchester or London, the honest answer is a planned overnight: collected during the day, on an evening sailing, delivered next morning.

Paperwork: the Green Lane, and Where Things Go Wrong
Under the Windsor Framework, goods moving from Great Britain to Northern Ireland travel either through the green lane, for goods staying within the UK, or the red lane with full customs treatment. Using the green lane depends on the sender being registered under the UK Internal Market Scheme.
The single most common cause of a hold-up in 2026 is not the lane. It is the goods description. “Parts”, “samples” or “gifts” on the paperwork is exactly the kind of entry that gets a consignment pulled, and it is entirely avoidable with thirty seconds of accurate description.
We are a courier, not a customs agent, and we are not going to pretend to file your declarations. What we will do is tell you plainly what the vehicle needs before it reaches the port, so nothing sits waiting on a form that should have been right the first time. If you move goods to Northern Ireland regularly and are not yet UKIMS registered, that is the conversation worth having with your broker before the next job, not during it.
A Note on the Republic of Ireland
Northern Ireland and the Republic are different countries with a customs border between them, and they are not interchangeable. Everything on this page is about Northern Ireland, the BT postcodes, and the UK internal market. If your delivery is actually going to Dublin, Cork or anywhere else in the Republic, tell us at the enquiry stage and we will give you a straight answer about what we can and cannot do rather than finding out at a port.
Our Courier Service in Northern Ireland: Where We Deliver
Our courier Northern Ireland coverage is all six counties and every BT postcode. Belfast and the greater urban area are the bulk of it, and we have a dedicated same day courier Belfast page covering local collections and deliveries within the city.
| Area | Covers |
|---|---|
| Belfast | BT1 to BT17, including the harbour estate and George Best Belfast City Airport |
| Greater Belfast | Lisburn, Newtownabbey, Mallusk, Castlereagh, Holywood, Bangor |
| North and north east | Antrim, Ballymena, Larne, Coleraine, Ballymoney |
| North west | Derry / Londonderry, Limavady, Strabane, Omagh |
| South and south east | Newry, Warrenpoint, Downpatrick, Banbridge, Craigavon, Portadown |
| West | Enniskillen, Dungannon, Cookstown, Magherafelt |
Once a vehicle is on the island, moving between those places is a straightforward same day job. Belfast to Derry is about 90 minutes and Belfast to Newry about an hour.
What We Move to Northern Ireland
Anything that fits a van and cannot wait for a network. Parcel delivery to Northern Ireland is the everyday version of it, but commonly the work is vehicle and machine parts keeping a workshop or line running, pallets where a pallet network would add three days and two handlings, large or heavy items a parcel carrier has refused or surcharged, legal documents and signed originals, and fragile or high-value goods that should not be going anywhere near a conveyor.
Northern Ireland Courier FAQs
Can you deliver to Northern Ireland the same day?
From western Scotland, yes. A morning collection around Glasgow, Ayrshire or Carlisle can cross from Cairnryan in about two hours and deliver in Belfast the same day. From England the honest answer is next morning on a planned overnight, because the crossing from Birkenhead or Heysham is around eight hours. Anyone promising same day London to Belfast is guessing.
How much does a courier to Northern Ireland cost?
You are hiring a vehicle and a driver plus a ferry crossing, so the price reflects the actual journey rather than a weight band. Whether it is a single parcel or a pallet going from the UK to Ireland’s northern counties, it is one fixed all-inclusive figure covering the van, driver, fuel and the crossing, agreed before you book. There is no separate island surcharge added afterwards.
Do you charge a Northern Ireland surcharge?
No. Networks apply offshore or extended-area surcharges because Northern Ireland sits awkwardly in their hub model. A dedicated vehicle is priced on the route it actually drives and sails, so the figure you are quoted is the figure you pay.
Do you handle customs paperwork or UKIMS registration?
No, and you should be cautious of a courier that says it will. We are not customs agents. We will tell you clearly what the vehicle needs before it reaches the port, including why a vague goods description is the most common cause of a delay, but UKIMS registration and declarations stay with you or your broker.
Can you do pallet delivery to Northern Ireland?
Yes, one to five pallets on a dedicated tail-lift vehicle. This is one of the clearest cases for a dedicated van: a pallet network typically routes NI freight through a hub, a sailing and a local partner, adding days and handlings. Ours stays on one vehicle the entire way. See same day pallet delivery.
Is the consignment insured during the crossing?
Yes. Goods-in-transit and public liability cover run for the whole job including the sailing, and the consignment stays on our vehicle rather than being handed to a ferry operator or a partner network. For high-value loads tell us the figure at booking so we can confirm the level of cover in writing first.
Do you collect from Northern Ireland back to the mainland?
Yes, it works identically in reverse. Collected anywhere in the province, onto a sailing, and delivered in England, Scotland or Wales by the same driver. Return legs are often better value because the vehicle is making the crossing anyway, so it is worth asking.
Sending Something to Northern Ireland?
One call, one fixed price, one van the whole way. We’ll tell you which sailing it needs and when it will actually land.
