    Quick answer

How far can a same day courier go in one day?

With one driver, roughly 400 miles in a single run, which covers London to Glasgow with an early collection. That ceiling is set by law rather than by effort: GB rules cap a van driver at 10 hours’ driving and 11 hours on duty a day. Beyond that we run a two-driver relay or a planned overnight, and we tell you which before you book.

The Routes We Run Most Often

Every route runs the same way: collected from your address, driven straight to the destination, handed over by the same driver with photographed proof of delivery. Van traffic on Britain’s roads reached 58.8 billion vehicle miles in 2025, ten per cent above pre-pandemic levels, and a direct run is the only way to stop that congestion compounding at every hub a network sends your consignment through.

    London to Birmingham

About 120 miles and two and a half to three hours on the M40 or M1. The busiest corridor we run, and comfortably a same morning job with an early collection.

    London to Birmingham courier

    Birmingham to London

The same 120 miles in reverse, with the congestion charge and ULEZ built into the fixed price rather than added at the London end.

    Birmingham to London courier

    London to Bristol

Roughly 120 miles and two and a half hours down the M4, and a natural route to extend on into South Wales or the South West the same day.

    London to Bristol courier

    London to Manchester

About 200 miles and four to four and a half hours on the M6 or M1. Collected in the morning, delivered the same afternoon.

    London to Manchester courier

    Manchester to London

The same 200 miles southbound, where the constraint is usually the M25 and the London approach rather than the motorway itself.

    Manchester to London courier

    London to Leeds

Around 195 miles and about four hours up the M1, straight into West Yorkshire with the rest of the county close behind.

    London to Leeds courier

    London to Glasgow

About 410 miles and seven hours of driving, which puts it right at the edge of what one driver can legally do in a day. Same day with an early collection; otherwise a relay.

    London to Glasgow courier

These are the corridors we run most, not the only ones. Tell us both postcodes and we’ll quote the actual journey, with an honest delivery time attached.

Why One Driver Tops Out at About 400 Miles

Most couriers are vague about long distances. The reason there is a hard ceiling is simple, and it is written down.

Under the GB domestic drivers’ hours rules, a van driver must not drive for more than 10 hours in a day or be on duty for more than 11. Duty includes collection, loading, unloading and the paperwork at both ends, not just motorway time. Once you take off the time spent in the collection city, in the destination city and on legal breaks, a single driver’s realistic range for a same day, door-to-door run is about 400 miles.

That is why London to Glasgow is achievable same day with an early start, and why London to Aberdeen or Inverness is not. Anyone who promises the second as a single-driver same day job is either planning to break the rules or planning to be late.

Routes to and From Other Cities

The route pages above cover our busiest point-to-point corridors. For everywhere else, our location pages set out collection times, postcodes and realistic journey times from that city, which is usually the more useful starting point.

From the Midlands and East: Northampton, Derby, Norwich and Ipswich. From the South West and Wales: Exeter, Plymouth, Swansea and Cardiff. From the North: Leeds, Newcastle, Hull and York. From Scotland: Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Inverness. Or see the full list of courier locations.

Runs to Northern Ireland involve a ferry crossing, which changes what is possible on timing. See our Northern Ireland courier page for how those work.

    Return Legs and Backloads

Every route runs in both directions, and the return journey is where most of the value hides. A vehicle that has delivered in Manchester is going back to London anyway, so a consignment travelling the other way is usually far cheaper than a separate booking.

If you have regular traffic in both directions on the same corridor, it is worth setting up as a contract run rather than quoting fresh each time.

    FAQs

    Same Day Courier Route FAQs

What is the longest route you can do the same day?

With one driver, about 400 miles door to door, which covers London to Glasgow with an early collection. The limit comes from GB drivers’ hours rules, which cap a van driver at 10 hours’ driving and 11 hours on duty a day. Longer routes run as a two-driver relay or a planned overnight.

Do you run routes that are not listed here?

Yes. These are the corridors we run most often, not the only ones. We quote any route in mainland Britain, plus Northern Ireland by ferry. Give us both postcodes and the deadline and you will get the real journey time and one fixed price.

Is the price the same in both directions?

Usually close, but not always. London-bound jobs include the congestion charge and ULEZ in the fixed price, and time of day affects the London approach more than the departure. We quote the specific journey rather than applying a flat route rate.

Can you collect something on the return journey?

Yes, and it is usually worth asking about. A vehicle heading back along the same corridor can carry a return consignment for considerably less than a separate booking. Tell us about both jobs when you call and we will price them as one.

What happens on routes over 400 miles?

We use a two-driver relay, where a fresh driver takes over part way, or run a planned overnight with delivery first thing. Both keep the consignment on a dedicated vehicle without breaking drivers’ hours rules. We will tell you which suits your deadline before you book.

Does the consignment change vehicles on a relay?

Not usually. On most relays the vehicle carries on and the driver changes, so your consignment is not unloaded or handled at the changeover. Where a vehicle swap is genuinely needed we tell you in advance.

Is the consignment insured over a long route?

Yes. Goods-in-transit and public liability cover run for the whole journey regardless of distance, with photographed proof of delivery. For high-value loads tell us the figure when you book so we can confirm the cover in writing first.
